The problem this actually solves
Most cameras can already receive GPS from a phone. The reason people still end up with untagged photos is not the camera — it is that the phone app stops feeding it the moment you put the phone in your pocket, switch apps, or the screen locks. You find out weeks later, when the map is empty.
Shutterpin is built around that single failure. After a one-time setup it reconnects in the background every time your camera wakes, and it keeps a track log as a second net. You do not open the app to shoot.
What you get
- Hands-off geotagging — turn the camera on and location is written into the photo at the moment of capture. No app to open, no cable, no import step.
- Every camera covered — bodies with Bluetooth location linking get live GPS. Every other camera is covered by track logging plus a QR time slate, so you can tag afterwards with the same accuracy.
- Clock drift handled — camera clocks drift and many bodies cannot be set to UTC. The QR time slate measures the real offset instead of guessing, so after-the-fact tagging lands on the right second.
- It tells you when something is wrong — permissions, battery settings, a second phone holding the camera, precise location turned off. Silent failure is what ruins a trip; you get the cause and the fix.
- Standard GPX export — your tracks are yours, in a format any photo tool reads.
Your location never reaches us
Coordinates go from your phone to your camera over Bluetooth and nowhere else. Our servers have no field capable of storing a coordinate or a track — that is a design constraint, not a policy promise. See the privacy policy.
Honest answers
- Why not free? There is no advertising and no data to sell — deliberately. The subscription is what pays for the servers, for adding camera models, and for keeping the background behaviour working across OS updates. That is the whole business model.
- Why yearly rather than one payment? Because the work is ongoing: phone operating systems change how background apps behave every year, and camera bodies keep being added. A one-time lifetime purchase is also available in the app if you would rather not think about renewals at all.
- What if my camera isn't supported for live GPS? Post-tagging works with any camera, and it is included — not a lesser tier. Check the compatibility list before you buy.
- What happens after the trial? Location sending stops; the app, your tracks and your exports stay. Nothing is deleted.
